My top 10 most anticipated films of 2009

Happy New Year! I thought I would start off the new year with a post about one of my favorite things... Movies! Chances are I wont get out to see even half of these, but I will try valiantly. Most likely I will end up seeing the bulk of these when they land on Blu-ray. So here is the list and a few reasons why I've picked them...

1. Watchmen - The sole reason for this pick is the trailer you see above. When I saw the first trailer attached to The Dark Knight last summer it sparked zero interest in the film for me. In fact it did quite the opposite. I didn't want to see the movie based on that trailer. This new trailer however completely grabbed me. This is a beautiful trailer that really sells the films for me. What really impresses me about the trailer as well is the fact that they were able to use Philip Glass' score from Koyaanisqatsi to magnificent effect. It doesn't feel out of place and sets an amazing tone. Sadly though, if FOX has it's way we may not see this movie until next year or later.

2. Public Enemies - This one is simple for me... Michael Mann is one of my favorite filmmakers. He is directing Johnny Depp and Christian Bale here which adds another layer of interest for me as I like both these actors. The film is a crime drama set during the Great Depression with the focus on the FBI agent Melvin Purvis' attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd.

3. UP - Based solely on the footage I saw at Comic-Con last year, this is my most anticipated animated feature of the year. The story sounds so enchanting and heart warming. I don't want to spoil anything by giving too much of it away here. Looks like another winner from Pixar.

4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - I'm a fan of both the books and movies. Seeing the cave sequence realized on film may possibly be the single moment in film I am looking forward to the most this year. I'm glad they are bringing back the director from the last film. I think he did a great job directing the cast and that film turned out to be one of my favorite from the series thus far.

5. Avatar - I grew up watching and studying James Cameron's films. His passion and imagination is part of what sparked my own. I know very little about the film beyond that fact that is a Stereoscopic Sci-fi film by James Cameron. But that's enough for me.

6. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - I cannot resist the attraction of giant fighting robots. Robots are my weak spot. I'm okay with that. I look forward to seeing this film. The first was pure popcorn entertainment and it did what it set out to do. I didn't play with Transformers as a child. The last film was my first real exposure to the story and characters and I felt that it was a great way to be introduced to them. I was very entertained by the film and I look forward to more entertainment this summer.

7. The Princess and the Frog - Disney's return to Traditional Animation! Those that know me well know my love for the medium of Animation. Choosing this film is easy for me. Plus I love that it will be set in New Orleans. I have been there many times myself and it's a beautiful place and should make a great setting for this film.

8. Terminator: Salvation - Again... Robots. I wasn't very interested in this when I first heard they handed it over to McG. (What kind of director bills himself as McG?!) I saw a bit of it at Comic-Con last year though and I was intrigued. I'm not going to rush out and be first in line to see it in theaters but I'd like to see it eventually. I loved T2 and enjoyed T3. Believe it or not I've never seen the original Terminator. I know, crazy huh? The film has even been deemed important enough to be preserved by our Government! Okay I'm making a resolution right now... I will watch the original Terminator before seeing this new one.

9. The Road - I know close to nothing about this movie. How come it made your list you ask? Well I know it's a "Post Apocalyptic" tale and it's written Cormac McCarthy, the author of No Country for Old Men. That's enough to pique my interest.

10. Monsters vs. Aliens - I have seen this film in various incarnations too many times to count. I look forward to seeing in a theater packed full of people.

Thoughts? What films are you looking forward to?

My tops from that list are Public Enemies, Avatar, Terminator, and The Road, mostly for the same reasons as you.

PE because Michael Mann has made a couple films I really like, and the cast is great, and I like the setting; Avatar because I'm insanely curious about his 3D technology (and he's a good storyteller); Terminator because it actually looks good (though I have the same "McG" misgivings that you do); and The Road because I've heard the story is really good.
